This paper discusses English collocation representation from the perspective of lexicography.Based on several typical theories concerning collocation, i.e.Firthiantheory, NeoFirthian theory and Halliday and Hasans studies, the present study aims tomake a synthetical summary of the collocation representation in English learners dictionaries and shed some light on the collocation representation of future English learners dictionaries so as to make them better appropriate for the actual needs of English learners. First of all, the present study is mainly based on big five English learners dictionaries, namely, Oxford Advanced LearnersDictionary, Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, Collins COBUILD English Language Dictionary, Cambridge International Dictionary of English and MACMILLAN English Dictionary for Advanced Learners. In light of collocation representations in big five English learners dictionaries, that is to say, definition, exemplification, word expansion, chunk and usage note, this paper makes a comparative analysis and summarizes the merits and demerits of theirs respectively. In addition, the author makes a tentative classification of English collocation. Grammatical collocations are cut into explicit collocations and implicit collocations; lexical collocations are divided into free collocations and restricted collocations. Moreover, restricted collocations are classified into strong restricted collocations, more restricted collocations and less restricted collocations. Lastly, the present study tries to put forward some thinking for collocation representations in future English learners dictionaries. That is to say, collocation shall be mainly presented in definition, exemplification and chunks, which is helpful to English learning.
