  Mammalian iron metabolism is delicately regulated by many modulators.Among them, hepcidin is the key hormone that negatively modulate iorn hemeostasis.Hepcidin induces internalization and further degradation of ferroportinl (mammalian iron exporter), thus reduce iron absorbtion in intestinal and iron effiux in macrophages.Hepcidin defficiency leads to iron overload in major organs, which is the main reason that cause human hemochromatosis.Thus, hepcidin is a critical therapeutic target for curing hemochromatosis.The study of hepcidin regualtion has great potentiality for the above subject, and is been luanched for dacades.
