Agitation can be defined as a non specific constellation of relatively unrelated behaviors that can be seen in a number of clinical conditions, usually presenting a fluctuation course.Psychomotor agitation is probably best described as a condition in which patients display excessive verbal and/or motor activity.Agitation is the main reason for admissions in schizophrenia.Agitation can have a different pathophysiology, depending on the specific psychiatric disorder.If left untreated agitation can lead to violent or suicidal behavior and coercion.We will discuss the epidemiology of agitation as well as guidelines describing different pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment strategies.Agitation and its consequences (including coercion) can be prevented using risk assessment.Patients preferences will be discussed with respect to the treatment of agitation and the results of intervention studies to handle agitation will be presented.
