The last two decades of research into chronic pain have brought a revolution in our thinking concerning the molecules that are involved in chronic pain states.Yet, this increase in understanding has not led to a similar revolution in the way chronic pain is treated. The talk will use an evolutionary perspective to tie molecules ranging from those driving aversion memory mechanisms in sea slugs to molecules critical for hippocampal plasticity in rodents to mechanisms of plasticity in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord resulting from peripheral injury.
