Heterologous proteins produced in recombinant bacteria usually fail to reach their native conformation and accumulate as insoluble, refractile aggregates called inclusion bodies.Such protein deposits have been often regarded as amorphous masses of inactive protein specifies devoid of any biological activity. However,a few independent, already classical observations revealed the occurrence of native-like protein species in inclusion bodies and some extent of biological activity when they are formed by enzymes.
