Background and objectives: We initiated this European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) multicenter phase Ill randomized study to assess the safety and the purging efficacy of CD34+ selection compared to unselected PBPC in patients with myeloma undergoing autologous transplantation.Design and methods: One hundred eleven myeloma patients were randomized to receive autologous peripheral blood progenitor cells transplantation (PBPC), either CD34+ selected (A =56) or unselected PBPC (B =55).
