Plant mitochondrial transcription termination factor(mTERF)genes encoded in the nucleus act on expression regulation of organellar genes via binding to nucleic acids.Identification and sequence analysis of mTERF genes in 18 plants revealed that higher plant genomes encode more mTERF genes than lower plants.M-class mTERF genes are specific to higher plants and most of their products are targeted to mitochondria.Amplification of mTERF gene family in higher plants is mainly contributed by expansion of M-class mTERF genes through tandem duplication.
