It is significantly harmful for human health to long-term exposure to high altitude hypoxia environment. However, it is still lack of research for the influence of germ cell development and male reproductive endocrine system on the high altitude hypoxia, and the relationship between environmental factors and reproductive health hazards are still unclear. In this study, 78 male officers in the plateau were epidemiologically tested by the rapid sperm concentration detection kits and results showed that sperm concentration and activity were significantly lower than some plain areas.Plateau hypoxia can significantly increase the percentage of abnormal sperm, sperm apoptosis, but apoptosis of germ cells had no effect;and abnormal semen viscosity, liquefaction time delay.Electron microscopy showed that the head and nuclear of sperm were hollow, mitochondrial swelling, local axoneme disappeared, the occurrence of apoptosis in the plateau populations.Altitude hypoxia may directly affect spermatogenesis, and may also be indirect effects of the neuroendocrine system through the spermatogenic process. It has been shown that plateau hypoxia may impact content of neuropeptide Y and reproductive hormone in human serum in following details: increase of serum testosterone levels;decrease of levels of estrogen, luteinizing hormone, gonadotropin, follicle stimulating hormone;elevation of human chorionic gonadotropin levels, as well as decrease of neuropeptide Y of seminal plasma in plateau population. These results imply that plateau hypoxia can affect related hormones of the neuroendocrine and reproductive system.Neuropeptide Y may be associated with spermatogenesis disorders in the high altitude environment since neuropeptide Y may act on the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis by sex hormone-dependent manner to affect testicular function. This research attempts to investigate many aspects of the damage of sperm on altitude hypoxia for future interventions to provide experimental basis.
