Yb3+ doped large mode area fiber has wide application in high power laser facility.In past five years, we have developed a patented method to fabricate large size Yb3+ doped silica core glass by sol-gel method combined with high temperature and its corresponding LMA fiber.We success at realizing co-doping of p5+, F, Al3+ with Yb3+ ions in 10mm diameter and 200mm length core glass with optical homogeneity of 2x104 (△n).The refractive index difference as low as 5×10-5 between Yb3+ doped core glass at about 5000ppm concentration and pure silica glass can be achieved by the modification of co-doped ions.The spectroscopic properties and structures of above core glasses have been investigated.As a reference, the fiber fabricated by rod in tube with core attenuation less than 0.05dB/m at 1200 nm was obtained.In addition, the latest progress on laser performance of Yb3+ doped LMA fiber with core diameter as large as 50 μm will be presented.
