The worldwide population of individuals >60 years of age has increased,and it is now double that in 1980.The average lifespan has increased remarkably during the past century,and the number of elderly people worldwide will exceed the number of children in the near future.The number of Japanese elderly individuals (>65 years of age) has been rapidly increasing.Japan has become a "super-aged" society in that individuals aged =65 years account for 23% of the total population.In China,the population of individuals >60 years of age has reached 185 million and comprises 13.7% of the total population.The number of Chinese elderly individuals >60 years of age is predicted to exceed 400 million in 2033.
