Type 1 diabetes (T1D) results from the immune-mediated destruction of insulin-producing B-cells by autoreactive CD4 and CD8 T cells.T1D ranks as the most common chronic childhood disease and its prevalence is increasing.Presently, insulin therapy rescues patients with T1D from certain death but does not satisfactorily prevent long-term chronic complications typically occurring at a relatively young age. Therefore, an early intervention delaying or completely halting disease progression is warranted.
