Obesity is one of the major risk factor of metabolic syndrome, and uncontrolled weight gain can accelerate its progression.Weight gain leads to various complications by increasing insulin resistance, uncontrolled blood sugar, dyslipidemia and is associated with increased mortality.Central obesity in Asians had lead to growing epidemic of type 2 diabetes mellitus and coronary artery disease.Unfortunately, the drugs commonly used to control weight are associated with side effects and have not been successful in reducing significant weight. Thus in patients with obesity or metabolic syndrome, effective medications are required which significantly reduce weight and improve metabolic disturbances and fulfil other unmet needs in its management.
