Background: Anti-SSa antibodies are useful in the diagnosis of autoimmune disease, particularly primary and secondary Sjogrens Syndrome. They are also found in some forms of cutaneous lupus and neonatal lupus predicating the risk of neonatal heart block. Most laboratories employ enzyme immunoassay (EIA) detection techniques which, although simple and sensitive, often lack specificity. We describe a comparison of this method to a novel counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIEP) assay in development for detection of anti-SSa and other extractable nuclear antibodies concurrently.
