Purpose In patients with hematologic disease, several factors can lead to concomitant cardiac disease. For instance, long-term catheter use can cause thrombus formation, neoplastic infiltration can reach the heart, and iron overload may occur due to prolonged transfusions.Patients typically have neutropenia caused by the hematologic disease itself, chemotherapy, or stem cell transplantation; this in turn increases the risk of infections such as cardiac abscesses.
