Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) is one of the deadliest human cancers, with survival time in the month range.Despite many years of advancement in cancer biology research, the treatment of glioblastoma is still lagged behind, with no dramatic changes in the last 30 years.The hallmarks of these neoplasms are that they display a high degree ofvascularity and invasion, with tumor cells commonly invading several centimeters beyond the main tumor mass at diagnosis, thus rendering surgical cure impossible.Chemotherapy becomes a very important venue for glioblastomas treatment.According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 18,400 malignant tumors of the brain or spinal cord were diagnosed during 2004.Over 170,000 brain metastases are newly diagnosed each year.About 20% to 40% of all types of cancers are known to metastasize to the brain and cause devastating neurologic symptoms such as seizures, dementia,hemiparesis, aphasia and headache, contributing to poor quality of life, and shortened life expectancy.The overall median survival time was only 3.2 months after diagnosis of the brain lesion.
