Bacteria prefer to attach and grow on surfaces to develop into biofilms,an assemblage of microbial cells that is irreversibly associated with a surface.It seems that there is no unique physiology associated with the individual cells within the community,rather it is associated with the localized high cell density and the condition of their immediate extracellular environment spatially organized across the matrix.However,cells of the same microbial species can exhibit extremely different physiological states in a biofilm even when separated by as little as 5-10 μm.One of the most important features of biofilms is their resistant nature towards antimicrobial treatment.Bacteria living in biofilms can exhibit up to several hundred times greater resistance to antibiotics than planktonic bacteria [1].Current antibiotic coating approaches through sustained antibiotic release have unsolved problems such as short life-span,narrowed antibacterial spectrum,ineffectiveness towards resistant mutants,and the potential to hasten the antibiotic resistance process [2].
