With the continuous depletion of high-grade nickel ores such as millerite and niccolite,low-grade nickel laterite ores which comprised 73% of the worlds resources of nickel had become the major source for the production of nickel metal,especially those containing <2.0 wt.% nickel [1-3].Nickel from low-grade laterite ores was generally recovered through extractive metallurgy,that included reduction roasting followed by ammonia leaching,and high pressure leaching with sulfuric acid [3,4].Nevertheless,both sulfuric acid leaching and reduction roasting followed by ammonia leaching were not effective when the content of magnesium in laterite was higher than 15% [2,5].In addition,leaching processes could would cause environmental and health concerns that should be addressed.
