The brain and its neural circuits are most sensitively dependent on blood flow and oxygenation to maintain its normal function.Even brief episodes of interruption in perfusion or oxygen supply can compromise proper neural behavior, and prolonged depletion can result in traumatic brain injury.Rapid assessment of brain oxygenation is thus vital during cerebral ischemia and hypoxia.
