Voltage-gated Kv7 channels encoded by KCNQ1-5 genes play a crucial role in controlling neuronal excitability.KCNQ2/3 channels mediate the native M-current controlling neurons excitability, with mutations causing benign neonatal febrile convulsions(BFNCs).Compared with other Kv channels, KCNQ channels are unique in that they may be activated by small synthetic chemical ligands including retigabine, zinc pyrithione, flupirtine, celecoxib, ICA-27243, BMS-204352,QO-58and other acrylamides.KCNQ channels have been known as a target for screening potential drug candidates for the treatment of diseases related to hyperexcitabilty such as epilepsy, neuropathic pain and neurodegeneration.
