Leptin, the product of the Lep gene, reports levels of adiposity to the hypothalamus and other cells that regulate adiposity, including pituitary somatotropes, which secrete growth hormone (GH).It may also be involved in regulating gonadotropes, which secrete luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH).Global leptin or leptin receptor (LEPR) deficiency is associated with a decline in somatotrope and gonadotrope numbers, suggesting that leptin may be important in their maintenance.
