Reactive synthesis is an important approach to produce non-oxide ceramics with novel microstructures and properties.Reaction bonded silicon nitride(RBSN)is a successful example,and this technology has been explored to prepare machinable Si3N4-BN composites.In this presentation,recent developments of employing reactive synthesis to produce typical boride and carbide based ceramics will be summarized.
