Viable myocardium can be stunned myocardium, which is characterized by transient post-ischemic contractile dysfunction after restoration of normal coronary blood flow, and hibernating myocardium, which is characterized by chronic contractile dysfunction in presence of a reduced blood flow at rest.Various non-invasive imaging techniques, although with not precisely identical sensitivities and specificities, are available for detection of viable myocardium, including magnetic resonance imaging, dobutamine stress echocardiography, and nuclear imaging with single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) or positron emission tomography.
