Transparent Hydrophobic-Hydrophilic Asymmetry Microchannel Used for De-Emulsification Process

  A transparent asymmetry microchannel with hydrophobic and hydrophilic inner walls was used in the de-emulsification process,to directly observe the oil-water two immiscible phases fluid in the asymmetry microchannel.This microchannel consisted of two glass plates: the rectangular channel was chemically etched in one plate,and the other plate had been modified to be hydrophobic with the silanization reaction.Special plate design with frosted surface treatment make sure that the microchannel can be disassembled easily and repeated used.This microchannel with clearances of 57 μm was used to de-emulsification the kerosene in water emulsion with Sauter diameters of 10 μm,and the best de-emulsification efficiency of 30% was achieve by single passing the microchannel at the velocity of 2 mL/min.With the microscopic observation at the hydrophobic plate,the kerosene phase shows a vortex flow near the exit end of the transparent asymmetry microchannel,and a distinct velocity difference between water and kerosene phase existed.This phenomenon is the same as the mechanism proposed by Okubo,and indicated that the surface force of hydrophobic glass acting on the kerosene droplets intensifies the de-emulsification process.
