Denmark is one of the European countries with a high risk of breast cancer and one of the countries in the world with the highest age standardized breast cancer mortality. At the same time Denmark is one of the countries where the debate on pros and cons of screening has been most intensive and documented quality measurements are essential to meet the debate.Mammography screening started in Copenhagen in 1991, in Fyn in 1993 and inFrederiksberg in 1994.The screening programme in Copenhagen and Frederiksberg were merged in 1996.These programmes were until 2001, where the island Bornholm started screening, the only screening programmes in Denmark. In 1999 the Danish Parliament passed a law requiring all counties to offer mammography screening to women aged 50-69 but no date was set for the implementation and nationwide screening just started in Demark in 2007 in connection with the merging of 14 counties into 5 regions.
