Breast carcinomas are highly heterogeneous, with many different pathological subtypes and recently described molecular subtypes. This heterogeneity among tumors occurring in different patients should not hide another important level of heterogeneity: intra-tumoral heterogeneity (ITH).ITH not only consists of frequent coexistence, in the same tumor,of invasive tumor cells, in situ tumor cells, stromal cells, residual normal cells and necrosis but also consists of heterogeneity among invasive tumor cells themselves.Pathologists often see in their daily practice tumors with various degrees of differenciation and at most, have described simultaneously occuring tumors with obvious different origins, reported as "collision tumors".
