Blending different polymers or polymers with fillers to exploit synergistic effects and to reduce the time-to-market compared to the introduction of new polymers has been a winning strategy for many industrial fields of commodity plastics and composites.This option is also highly interesting for more “niche” applications,such as electronic,optic and last but not least,biomedical.Polymer based medical materials span from external,topical and internal applications,for structural as well as functional uses,with or without the addition of fillers (fibrous,granular or nanosized).Tissue engineering,bone reconstructive surgery,matrices for drug release,are among the best examples of the potentialities of polymer blends and composites in medicine.
