This paper presents a coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Discrete Element Method (DEM) approach to model the interaction between fluid and granular particles and its impact to relevant geomechanics problems.Drag force and buoyancy force are considered to be the interaction forces exchanged between consecutive DEM simulations and CFD calculations.The numerical tool is verified by benchmarking simulations of the settlement of single particle into water and the clastic one-dimensional consolidation problem.In both cases good agreements are found between the numerical predictions and the analytical solutions.We have further applied the numerical tool to the simulation of sand pile formed in water and debris flow into water reservoir.The various simulations demonstrate that the influence of fluid-particle interaction is well captured by the proposed method.
