林风眠先生在中国现代绘画教育史上的地位是非常重要的,特别是他的绘画艺术是在长期的争议和贬抑中逐渐得到公认的。在融合中西的探索上,林风眠有着从里到外的一致性。作为一位教育家,林风眠在培养专门艺术人才,倡导艺术运动,促进社会美育为宗旨的思想引导下,率先冲破临摹的传统之风,在强调基础训练的前提下,提倡创作自由,逐渐形成了一条调合中西艺术的新途径,对中国美术教育产生了深远的影响。如他早年为中国艺术教育界提出的兼容并包、融合中西,就是典型的精神范例,并且拓展出一条创造东方新兴艺术的艰难之路。
