Perturbative probes are essential for the exploration of nanoscale magnetism.Traditionally external magnetic fields are used to perturb the magnets ground state configuration. Here I will discuss how inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy with a scanning tunneling microscope can be used to characterize the spin dynamics in few-atom nanomagnets on surfaces [1].This inherently perturbative technique excites the magnet between energy eigenstates of the spin and allows quantifying the magnetic energy landscape of individual nanostructures. We have developed different measurement schemes that track the dynamical evolution of spins with time resolution ranging from picoseconds to hours. This makes it possible to measure spin relaxation times and the influence of the enwir onment with high precision.
