Constrained by the difficult availability of meteorological and hydrological data in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, it is important to study the hydrological problems of the plateau based on related hydrological models.Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), a distributed hydro-physical model developed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), was applied to simulate the runoff change in three adjacent catchments in South Tibet, China, including Kadongjia River Catchment (KDJRC), Gamalin River Catchment (GMLRC) and Kaluxiong River Catchment (KLXRC).And then the simulated runoff was analyzed comparatively. The results showed that the model was applicable to the simulation of monthly runoff in KDJRC and to the winter (summer) half year runoff in GMLRC.While the simulated and observed runoff had no good agreement in KLXRC.Analysis indicated that the different land uses resulted in the different simulated results. It was the glacier and bare lands covering almost half of the catchment area that caused the poor simulation in KLXRC, for which the runoff simulation of the catchment hopefully will be more ideal with the improvement of the snowmelt module of SWAT or with the combination of glacier-runoff model.
