Understanding of the hydrological variability at the regional scale was quite important for water resources management.For this purpose the Community Land Model CLM was employed to simulate the regional hydrological processes in the Yangtze River basin in the past 51 years.The model well reproduced the temporal variation of monthly runoff and long-term changes in annual runoff though large bias was found in three subcatchments of the upper Yangtze River basin.This illustrated the models capability of hydrological simulation in the large river basin with emphasis on the intra and inter-annual hydrologic variabilities.
