  Macalpinomyces eriachnes, is a monotypic species of smut fungus endemic to Australia.It is the type species of Macalpinomyces.In our study, combined morphological and multi-locus phylogenetic analysis of 31 specimens of Macalpinomyces eriachnes from 14 species of Edachne revealed a complex of host specific cryptic species.The taxonomy of this complex will be resolved by the description of several new species restricted to certain species of Eriachne.Further, Macalpinomyces was confirmed as belonging to the Ustilaginaceae.
