While post-partum depression is a condition found to affect a significant number of the population worldwide, it has gone largely undetected by primary health care teams.Early detection and accessible and cost-effective treatments addressing the multiple factors related to PPD are essential. These factors include a variety of risks to the physical, cognitive and emotional health of the infant.Critical reviews of the literature in this area support a multi-level systems approach to detection and treatment of PPD.Numerous factors related to infant temperament and neonatal status, maternal emotional functioning before, during and after pregnancy, and contextual factors that include partner and wider social support in childrearing, socio-economic status, level of stress and stressful life events are examples of the multi-level systems variables that must be comprehensively evaluated .and addressed.Assessing for multiple risk factors and/or the presence of PPD at key points of contact during prenatal visits, hospital stays and postnatal visits has been recommended in the literature.Similarly, a comprehensive approach to treatment has been described as involving the application of individual, relational and ecologically based interventions that target the mother, the infant and the mother-infant relationship in cost-effective ways that take into consideration a multitude of barriers to treatment.Psychotherapeutic interventions focusing on the mother, the infant, the mother-infant dyad and their broader contextual systems are required for effective treatment.
