Turkey is one of the home country of many beautiful bulbous plants,some of which have been cultivated in European gardens for several centuries.Most of the bulbous plants are known for their medicinal purposes in addition to their ornamental value.More recently,galanthamine found in Galanthus,Leucojum,Narcissus species is used in the treatment of Alzheimers disease.In our ongoing studies on to explore new bioactive compounds from Turkish medicinal plants;we have screened so far a notable number of the bulbs from Turkish geophytes namely Fritillaria,Iris,Colchicum,Tulipa,Lilium and Nectaroscordum species for their antioxidant activities depends on oxidative stress play a critical role in different diseases.
