The taxonomic status of Amycolatopsis underwent a long-term and complicated revision history.It was once considered as a streptomycete, then transferred to Nocardia, and finally reclassified as a newly established genus Amycolatopsis, which was defined typically by biochemical characteristics of the cell walls (chemotype Ⅳ).Sequence analyses of three complete Amycolatopsis genomes and one incomplete Amycolatopsis genome revealed some common molecular markers could account for their chemotaxonomic phenotypes.These markers, closely related to the synthesis of cell wall (e.g., mycolic acid, arabinose, glycine, DAP), or the synthesis of the components in cell membrane (e.g., phospholipid), were consistent with the criteria of chemotaxonomy.
