In this work, a novel type of nanocomposite consisting of carbon nanotube (CNTs) core and a amorphous silica (SiO2) shell was successfully preparcd by the st(o)ber process.Carboxyl functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) which were oxidated using the concentrated sulfuric acid / nitric acid mixture (3∶1 v/v) treatment were used as cores on which a silica uniform layer was grown.The effect of surface oxidation treatment of MWNTs was investigated by FTIR.The result showed that MWNTs functionalized with-COOH group formed an efficient matrix for the growth of silica.The core-shell hetero-nanostructure have been confirmed by FT-IR, XRD, TEM, and EDS.The results showed silica layer was continuously coated on the surface of MWNTs core with a thickness of about 2-5 nm.
