Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is one of the central reactions for fuel cells.1 To efficiently convert chemical energy to electricity, high performance ORR catalysts become essential. Up to now, platinum (Pt) exhibits the best performance, and Pt/C is the commercial cathode catalyst for fuel cells. It is generally regarded that carbon itself does not show a 4-electron pathway for ORR, and the dispersed Pt particles on carbons are vital and act as the active sites for ORR. The carbon itself acts as an ORR catalyst requires the heteroatoms doping, e.g. mostly N-doing.
