Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) represents an active, multi-disciplinary research area that often starts with isolation and identification of bioactive compounds in herbal extracts.The complexity of herbal extracts typically exceeds the resolving power of any single chromatographic technique.As a result, a multiple-technique approach, both online and offiine, is often necessary to maximize the resolution of these complex samples.Recent technological advances in separation science, including both instrumentation and column chemistries, have significantly accelerated the understanding of the chemical foundation of many Chinese herbal medicines.
