Rhizoma Chuanxiong, the dried rhizome of Ligusticum Chuanxiong Hort., a well-known traditional Chinese medicine, has been used in formulas to treat different types of headache in China for centuries.Ferulic acid, tetramethylpyrazine and various phthalides in Chuanxiong showed a wide range of pharmacological activies relevant to this effect, including neuroprotection, improving brain microcirculation, reducing cerebral infarct area and neurological deficit-score, vasorelaxtion effects.However, after oral administration, which compounds could pass through brain-blood barrier into brain tissuse is still unclear.
