Inactivation of the von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) tumor suppressor gene has been implicated in the tumorigenic pathway of renal cell carcinoma (RCC), a common malignant tumor arising from the kidney.RCC occurs in 3.62 and 1.95 cases per one hundred thousand people among men and women, respectively, in Taiwan each year.Among them 80% are classified as clear-cell RCC.Our previous studies have demonstrated that two allelic polymorphisms, both A and G, at positions 19 and 1149 on the nucleotide sequence in the VHL gene are informative and implicated in the occurrence of RCC worldwide.
