Within the biorefinery paradigm, many non-monomeric sugar compounds have been shown to be inhibitory to enzymes and microbial organisms that are used for hydrolysis and fermentation.Bioabatement is a potential method to remove inhibitory compounds from lignocellulose hydrolysates that could be incorporated into a scheme for fermentation of ethanol from cellulose.Here, Coniochaeta ligniaria, an Ascomycete that metabolizes furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, was evaluated to detoxify a dilute acid pretreated biomass slurry.Results showed that, when bioabating a dilute acid pretreated corn stover liquid (CSL, 10 % w/v), all of the acetic acid was removed after 48h, as well as >30% of formic acid, HMF, furfural, and phenolic compounds (this last a strong enzyme inhibitor).High cellulose (Solka Floc) conversion (10-15%) was obtained with 48h bioabated CLS when compared to non-bioabated CSL (tested at enzyme loadings of 1.15 and 15 FPU for cellulase, and 3 and 30 CBU for β-glucosidase).This is similar result obtained by using a chemical process (Overlime).
