The neuro-muscular system benefits from remarkable muscular redundancies: A motor task may normally be performed in different alternative ways making use of several muscles acting simultaneously. The origin this redundancy lies in the multiplicity of the descending pathways from the central to the peripheral nervous system. Thus, a given central command may result in different activations and, conversely, different commands can result in the same activation.
