Shielding of the Geomagnetic Field Alters Actin Assembly and Inhibits Cell Motility in Human Neurobl

  Shielding the geomagnetic field(GMF),so called the hypomagnetic field(HMF),affects the proliferation,development and brain function in those seemingly “non-magnetosensitive” cells and organism,as well as assembly of the cytoskeleton in vitro.However,the mechanism of the GMF-sensation in non-iron-rich and non-photo-sensing cells remain poorly understood.Previously,we found that the HMF(static magnetic field,< 200 nT)could repress the expression of genes associated with cell migration and cytoskeleton assembly in human neuroblastoma cells(SH-SY5Y cell line).In this study,we measured the motility of SH-SY5Y cells and actin assembly in the HMF.The HMF induced a reduction in F-actin content and inhibited cell adhesion and migration.Moreover,following exposure to the HMF,the number of cell process was reduced and cell morphology was smaller in size and more regular in shape.Furthermore,disordered kinetics of actin assembly in vitro was observed during exposure to the HMF,as evidenced by the presence of granule and meshed products.These results indicate that elimination of the GMF acutely affects assembly of the motility-related actin cytoskeleton,and suggest that F-actin plays a key role in a cells ability to sense the GMF.
