Despite significant medical advances, cardiovascular disease has become a major cause of mortality in the industrialized world.A large number of cardiovascular deaths can be attributed to atherosclerosis, a progressive inflammatory and degenerative disease, which affects medium and large size arteries, and is characterized by fibroid, lipid-containing plaques in the arterial walls.Inflammation is a process integral to atherosclerosis, which produces oxidants as a byproduct.
