  The control and optimization of multi-physics problems requires the construction of reduced models.There are two major approaches,either one starts with a fine grid model and approximates it with a reduced order model that can be handled by control and optimization methods or one readily adapts the discretization to the control and optimization problem.We will discuss both approaches and their advantages and disadvantages on the basis of the treatment of disk brake squeal.
