In this talk,we will report some works on designing optimal finite element methods and efficient solvers for multi-phase problems.In particular,we will focus on dealing with the effect of discontinuous parameter in certain basic physics systems,and present the mechanisms how the optimality of the discretizations and the solver which are easy to implement is obtained based on some local operations near the interface where the discontinuity happens.
