  Introduction:Dry eye disease is associated with hormonal status and age.In Asia this clinically demanding condition is found to have a higher incidence than in the West.As many as 15% of the population over 50 may be affected.A distinct problem with dry eye disease is that the assessed clinical severity of the disease often does not correlate well with the patients complaints.Complicating this issue is the fact that there is a lack of objective clinical tests for evaluating this common condition.The proteins found in tears have an important role in the maintenance of the ocular surface and changes in their quality and quantity of tear components reflect changes in the health of the ocular surface.
