Nitric oxide(NO),as a colorless, odorless multifunctional signaling gas molecule, affects diverse life processes.Previous studies showed that brief treatment of SCN in vitro with glutamate triggers phase-shifting in rats, which can be effectively blocked by the inhibitors of the NMDAR(glutamate receptor)and the NO signaling. However, little is known about the mechanisms underlying direct interactions between nitric oxide signaling and the circadian clock. Here a specific nitric oxide probe DAF-FM DA was used to detect and quantify NO production in zebrafish. We found nitric oxide is primarily produced in the heart, the notochord and the tail fin,and particularly rhythmical NO production in the notochord and the tail fin but the heart.
