Deep Sequencing Identifies Novel and Conserved MicroRNAs in Salvia miltiorrhiza

  Small non-coding RNAs (sRNAs), such as microRNAs (miRNAs) and small interfering RNAs (siRNAs), play a critical role in plant growth, development, metabolism, and stress responses via post-transcriptional gene regulation.Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge is a well-known traditional Chinese medicine that can be utilized as a representative and medicinal model species for studying transcriptional regulation.Here, we characterized an sRNA transcriptome of S.miltiorrhiza by Solexa sequencing technology.Its complex sRNA population was of varying lengths, predominantly 24 nt.Searching for sequence similarities against miRBase, we found 201 conserved miRNA candidates from 89 different families that are perfectly matched to known miRNAs.
