The serine/threonine protein kinase B (PKB, a.k.a, Akt) constitutes an important node in diverse signaling cascades downstream of growth factor receptor tyrosine kinases and plays a pivotal role in a variety of cellular processes ranging from cell survival, growth, migration, cell cycle progression and cell proliferation to cell metabolism (lipid and glucose),cell polarity, muscle and cardiomyocyte contractility, angiogenesis, and self-renewal of stem cells.Abberations in cellular signaling pathways that involve the enzyme Akt are implicated in diverse diseases, such as cancer, diabetes mellitus, neurodegenerative diseases, muscle hypotrophy, and heart infarction.In the past decade, significant progress has been made in our understanding of the mechanisms underlying Akt activation phosphorylation, particularly on S473 at the hydrophobic motif.
